AUS v WI 2022: Nathan Lyon on the verge of surpassing Shane Warne’s record at the Adelaide Oval

The second Test between Australia and West Indies will be held in Adelaide from December 8.

Nathan Lyon | GettyOnce employed as a groundsman at the Adelaide Oval, Australia spinner Nathan Lyon is on the verge of achieving a remarkable record at the same venue in the second Test against West Indies, starting Thursday (December 8).

As of now, the off-spinner has taken 56 wickets at the Adelaide Oval and needs one more scalp to surpass the legendary Shane Warne.

Lyon seemed to be in a good form as he claimed eight wickets, including a match-winning 6-fer in the fourth innings during the opening Test against West Indies in Perth.

Since the Adelaide Test is a Day-Night fixture, the 35-year-old expects the pink ball to offer a helping hand.

"You talk to the batters and some batters find it hard to pick up the seam at night," Lyon told reporters on Tuesday (December 6). "So potentially (you) bowl a few more variations, simple things like cross-seam and stuff, to try and keep the batter guessing."

Lyon has another record in sight, in tandem with slip fielder Steve Smith. They have collaborated for 51 "caught Smith, bowled Lyon" dismissals, matching Warne and former skipper Mark Taylor's output.

It is the Australian record for the most prolific bowler-fielder combination, not involving a wicketkeeper.

"Smithy actually sent me that message yesterday saying congrats, we are equal with (Taylor) and Warnie. When you see it like that it is pretty remarkable," said Lyon. "I love having Smithy there, and he gives me a lot of feedback on different paces and how the shape is looking."
