The Test series between Sri Lanka and Australia kick-started on Wednesday (29th June) at Galle. After being asked to field first, the visitors bowled pretty well to put pressure on the hosts and bundled them out for just 212 runs in their first innings.

Nathan Lyon starred with the ball as he picked up a 5-fer and helped his side be on the top. However, Australia would be disappointed with the batting performance they put up on Day 1 after bowling out Sri Lanka early.

Australia ended the opening day at 98/3 with three premier batters in David Warner (25), Marnus Labuschagne (13) and Steve Smith (6) back in the hut. Among all the three dismissals, the wicket of Smith would’ve disappointed them a lot as it could’ve been avoided.

It was a horrible mix-up with Usman Khawaja which saw Smith back in the hut for just 6 runs. The incident happened during the 20th over when the ball struck the right-hander on the pads and went to the empty space on the off-side.

Smith initially decline the run but after a few seconds, he gestured to Khawaja for a run. The non-striker responded to the right-hander’s call and took a couple of steps ahead before he changed his mind and pulled himself back.

By the time Khawaja declined the run, Smith had already come halfway down the crease. He tried to return in time, but the effort went in vain as he fell short and was run out.

After he got out, Smith was furious at Khawaja for sending him back and even raised his arms in anger.
