Australia's Test vice-captain Steve Smith created history on Thursday (March 24) by becoming the fastest batter to reach the milestone of 8,000 Test runs in his 151st innings, breaking the record of Kumar Sangakkara who took 152 innings.

On Day 4 of the ongoing third Test in Lahore, Smith scored only 17 in the second innings but created the record when on 7. He has scored 8010 runs in 85 Tests at an average of 59.77 with 27 hundreds and 36 fifties.

Smith is the seventh Australian and 33rd batter overall to reach the milestone of 8,000 runs in Test cricket, a remarkable achievement after beginning his career as a leg-break bowler.

The prolific right-handed Australian batter has not scored a hundred in the format since the 2019 Ashes which has been a cause of worry for some, and his average which almost touched 65, has now dropped below 60. During the ongoing series, he scored three fifties but couldn't get to three figures.

Australia set a target of 351 for Pakistan with a minimum of 121 overs left.
