England all-rounder Ben Stokes survived a close call on Day 3 of the fourth Ashes 2021-22 Test when the ball hit the stumps but bails didn't fall. Stokes was given out LBW by the onfield umpire Paul Reiffel, but the replay showed he was nowhere close to the ball.

The incident happened in the post-lunch session on Friday (January 7) at the Sydney Cricket Ground, when England were four down on 57 runs. Stokes' dismissal at that time could have put England in big trouble.

Stokes decided to go for a review when he found it bizarre to be ruled out LBW despite not coming in contact with the ball. However, there was a sound when the ball passed through him and the umpire thought it hit his pads.

The replay left Stokes laughing after he saw the ball had hit the stumps and the bails remained unmoved. The luck was in his favor and he went on to score 66 runs in the first innings before getting out LBW to Nathan Lyon.

Australia are still ahead in the match after scoring 416/8d in the first innings and taking quick wickets of England early on Day 3. England were 36/4 in 21.5 overs at one stage.
