Apart from the fierce contest between bat and ball, the second day of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and New Zealand grabbed the attention for a confusing moment, involving Virat Kohli.

During the 41st over of India’s innings, Kohli expressed his displeasure after umpire Richard Illingworth sent an appeal for caught behind upstairs even though New Zealand didn’t opt for DRS.

Coming to the incident, left-arm pacer Trent Boult troubled the Indian captain with a delivery on the leg side. Subsequently, the Kiwi players went for a huge appeal for caught behind, thinking that there was a tickle before the ball was gathered by wicketkeeper BJ Watling.

While the umpire didn’t seem interested in the appeal, Boult was and he tried to persuade his skipper Kane Williamson to take a review. However, the timer was up before the New Zealand captain could take the review.

Despite this, Illingworth decided to send it upstairs for a review, after having a discussion with square-leg umpire Michael Gough.

The decision resulted in massive confusion and Virat Kohli also walked towards the umpire to question the call. After a brief discussion with the match officials, Kohli smiled before walking away.

TV replay vindicated that there was no connection between bat and ball and Kohli remained in the middle. Notably, New Zealand didn’t lose a review as they had not opted for DRS.
