Fast bowler Jofra Archer has been ruled out of England’s upcoming two-match Test series against New Zealand due to elbow injury, ECB confirmed on Sunday (May 16).

Archer had surgery in March to remove a glass fragment from a tendon on his right hand, an injury he picked up in January while cleaning at his home.

The 26-year-old was having treatment for a long-term elbow problem at the time.

While Jofra returned to action for county side Sussex against Kent this week, he bowled only five overs in Kent's second innings owing to pain in his right elbow.

"The England and Sussex medical teams will seek guidance, and Archer will see a medical consultant later this week to determine the next course of action on the management of his elbow," the ECB said in a statement.

During the India tour earlier this year, Archer featured in two of England's four Tests, all five T20Is and missed the three-match ODI series due to a worsening elbow injury. He didn’t turn up for Rajasthan Royals (RR) as well in the now-suspended IPL 2021.

The Test series between England and New Zealand will kick-start on June 2 at Lord’s.
