England captain Joe Root brought up his 20th Test ton in the ongoing first Test match between India and England at Chennai and became only the fifth captain to score a hundred in his 100th Test.

Joe Root was in a red hot form in the recently concluded 2-0 series sweep over Sri Lanka. The talismanic batsman amassed a startling 426 runs at a stunning average of 106.50 in four innings including two centuries with a high score of 228.

Continuing his fine form from the Sri Lanka series, Root celebrated his 100th Test with his third successive Test hundred in 2021 as visitors took control on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test-match between India and England at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday.

However, with his 20th Test ton, England skipper became only the fifth captain to score a hundred in his 100th Test match and joined the likes of Colin Cowdrey, Inzamam ul Haq, Ricky Ponting (2), and Graeme Smith.

England almost threw away a strong start, losing two quick wickets in the morning session, but Dominic Sibley (87) joined hands with Joe Root (128*) and denied India any success until the last over of the day with their 200-run stand at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Joe Root is also only the 3rd England player, 9th overall, after Colin Cowdrey & Alec Stewart to score a ton in their 100th Test.
