After making a resounding comeback to Test cricket with an innings victory over West Indies, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson lauded his team's "strong performance" in Hamilton but also urged the boys to "build on" their success in the next game in Wellington. 

Williamson led the Kiwis from the front, scoring an epic double ton and taking his team to a mammoth 519/7 (declared) in the first innings. The visitors then collapsed for just 138 and 247 against what is inarguably the greatest collective New Zealand attack seen in Test cricket.

However, despite crucial World Test Championship points and a 1-0 series lead under the bag, Williamson said his team can't let their guard down. 

"It was nice after such a long break to put in a strong performance," the captain told reporters, as quoted by Reuters. 

"A really good collective effort but something to build on. It's important we take some lessons from this into the next one (and) ... the big thing for us is to keep improving as a group."

Apart from Williamson, whose career-best 251 also earned him the 'Player of the Match', Black Caps had Tom Latham (86), Ross Taylor (38) and Kyle Jamieson (51) also contributing with the bat. 

The bowling unit then got into their act quickly and made short work of a lengthy West Indies line-up. Tim Southee (4/35 & 1/62), Trent Boult (1/30 & 1/63), Neil Wagner (2/33 & 4/66) and Jamieson (2/25 & 2/42) were once again brilliant in home conditions. 

"Full credit to the bowling attack," Williamson said. "Sometimes when you hit your areas and the ball is moving around and you're taking the edge then you sort of get a little bit ahead of yourself."

"It was a great lesson for us to try and get back to being patient and knowing you will get opportunities if you stay in your areas. It was great the guys stuck with it."

The second Test of the series will be played from December 11.
