NZ v WI 2020: New Zealand register innings win in Hamilton to go 1-0 up in the Test series

West Indies collapsed twice inside four days to hand New Zealand a massive victory.

Black Caps continued their dominance in home conditions | GettyWest Indies' lower middle-order batsmen Jermaine Blackwood and Alzarri Joseph were able to extend their late Day 3 resistance for about an hour early on Sunday (December 6) before New Zealand broke through and registered a comprehensive victory by an innings & 134 runs.

Resuming play at 196/6, which also was a recovery of sorts from 89/6, Blackwood (104) and Joseph (86) stretched their respectable stand for another 48 runs. Along the way, Blackwood reached his 2nd Test hundred after another counter-attacking display.

However, the right-hander fell soon afterwards, being caught off Neil Wagner (4/66) and his able partner too followed in the next over against Kyle Jamieson (2/42).

The visitors then folded for 247 runs following-on, having posted just 138 in the first innings in response to Black Caps' mammoth 519/7 (declared).

Injuring his finger while keeping wickets on Day 1, Shane Dowrich didn't come out to bat in the second essay too. He is now a doubtful starter for the second Test in Wellington, starting December 11, which pacer Kemar Roach is confirmed to miss as he returns home after his father's demise.

Captain Kane Williamson (251) was awarded the 'Player of the Match' after his marathon double ton, which laid the groundwork to home team's impregnable total and helped the robust Kiwi attack get into their act and attack for longer periods of time.

Brief scores:

New Zealand 519/7 decl. (Kane Williamson 251, Tom Latham 86; Shannon Gabriel 3-89, Kemar Roach 3-114) beat West Indies 138 (John Campbell 26; Tim Southee 4-35, Kyle Jamieson 2-25) & 247 (f/o) (Jermaine Blackwood 104, Alzarri Joseph 86; Neil Wagner 4-66, Kyle Jamieson 2-42) by an innings and 134
