Justin Langer hints Australia unlikely to spring up surprises for India Tests

The Australians are currently No.1 in the ICC Test rankings and are awaiting the India challenge.

The Test side will have gone 11 months without any game when the season kicks-off, after suspension of two World Test Championship fixtures scheduled for July against Bangladesh due to COVID-19 pandemic.

After retaining the Ashes in UK for the first time since 2001, Langer's wards went through an undefeated previous summer against Pakistan and New Zealand.

"We've been able to play some great Test cricket in the last 12-18 months," Langer was quoted as saying by AAP. "We're ranked number one at the moment and there's reasons for that."

"If someone's banging so hard on the door (in the Sheffield Shield) that we can't ignore them, that's what we're looking for."

"In our mind, it's pretty clear at the moment what that first Test squad would be, but it's exciting to see if anyone else is going to put their hand up."

Only 12 players were used by Australia in successive whitewashes against the visiting Pakistanis and Kiwis before the pandemic, with the emergence of Marnus Labuschagne in the middle-order their best news.

The inclusion of a fast-bowling all-rounder to manage quicks' workload, whether to bring back Mitchell Marsh or give youngster Cameron Green a vote of confidence will be debated, but all in all, Australians look settle, especially with Steve Smith and David Warner back after the ball-tampering saga.

Langer is confident of a good showing against the Indians despite the challenge being as much mental as physical to play a lengthy series within bio-secure arrangements.

The coach and those players not in UAE at the moment for the Indian Premier League (IPL) are going through a two-week quarantine at the Adelaide Oval since arriving from England after the completion of the white-ball series.

Those playing in the IPL, the likes of Smith, Warner, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood among others, however, might not have enough first-class cricket under their belt leading into the India Tests since they'll arrive home only mid-November.

"We look at performance and there's great opportunities every time they play cricket," Langer said.

"Whether it's in the IPL or the Sheffield Shield, there's a great opportunity to show everyone what they've got and put their hand up for the selectors."
