ENG v PAK 2020: Inzamam backs Pakistan to overcome painful defeat, win Test series

Pakistan lost in Manchester by three wickets despite being on top for most parts of the first Test.

Pakistan must approach the next Test in Southampton feeling confident it can win | GettyPakistan may have suffered a bitter defeat in the first Test in Manchester but former skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq believes Azhar Ali & company did show enough promise in the loss to suggest they can still come out triumphant in the series against England in the UK.

Despite being on top for most parts of the Test match at the Old Trafford, Pakistan went down by three wickets and conceded a 1-0 lead to the hosts.

The visitors had taken a 107-run lead at the end of the first half, having dismissed England for 219 in response to their 326.

And even though a collapse to just 169 all out in the third innings allowed the hosts to comeback in the match, chasing 277 on a deteriorating track and being 117/5 at one stage, England's chances had seemed significantly diminished.

Just then, however, an all-important sixth-wicket stand between Jos Buttler (75) and Chris Woakes (84*) bailed the hosts out and took them to an unlikely victory.

Pakistan's task now is to not let such a result play into its mind and step on the field fresh for the next Test in Southampton, beginning August 13.

"I think Pakistan team is better than England and we should have won the first Test. It's very disappointing but I believe Pakistan can still win the series," Inzamam said in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel 'The Match Winner'.

"When you are going through a rough phase, team's body language should not change. This was clearly the case in the first Test because Pakistan players seemed to be under pressure following a batting collapse in the second innings on the third day."

"The role of the team management is important after such a defeat because the players' morale will be down. They need to talk about the positives rather than focusing on the negatives," he added.
