ENG v WI 2020: Joe Root bags unwanted record after getting run-out in the first innings of third Test

Run-out dismissals have been following the England captain lately.

Joe Root got run out for 17 in the first innings of third Test | APJoe Root’s return to international cricket after the COVID-19 hiatus is not going as good as he would have liked. While England registered a series-levelling 113-run victory in the second Test, the skipper could make only 23 and 22 across the two innings.

In the first Test innings of the third Test, Root got run out for 17, which saw him create an unwanted record. Run-out dismissals have been following the England captain lately and Friday's (July 24) run-out dismissal in Manchester was his second successive in the span of four days.

He sacrificed his wicket for an in-form Ben Stokes on the final day of the second Test but the case was not the same on the opening day of the series-decider. Root found himself in trouble as he misjudged a single and a brilliant throw by Roston Chase from backward-point sent him packing.

With this dismissal, Joe Root became the England Test captain with most number of run-out dismissals. After taking charge as captain in 2017, the 29-year-old has now found himself short of the crease on four occasions, breaking 118-year old record of former English skipper Archie MacLaren.

Moreover, Root (6) is now only behind Geoff Boycott (7) and Matt Prior (7) in the list of England batsmen with most number of run-out dismissals.

Coming to the third Test, the visitors won the toss and asked the home team to bat first.

Riding on Ollie Pope’s 91*, Jos Buttler’s 56* and Rory Burns’ 57, England finished Day 1 on 258/4. Kemar Roach was the stand-out bowler for West Indies, claiming two wickets for 56 runs.
