ENG v WI 2020: Ben Stokes yet to take a call whether he will bowl in series-decider

ENG v WI 2020: Ben Stokes yet to take a call whether he will bowl in series-decider

Stokes was struggling with quadriceps injury heading into the third Test.

Ben Stokes | AFPEngland’s ace all-rounder Ben Stokes on Friday (July 24) said that he will take a call day-by-day whether he will be able to bowl in the third and final Test against West Indies as he carries an injury.

“I’ve been better,” Stokes said before the start of the first day’s play in Manchester. “But we were in a situation in the last game where everyone just had to throw everything that we possibly had at them.”

In the second Test, Stokes scored 176 and 78 not out across the two innings at Old Trafford and also picked up three wickets in the game as England defeated West Indies by 113 runs. However, the heroics left him with a quadriceps injury.

“It’s going to be a day-by-day thing to see (whether I can bowl). Yesterday I tested out my quad and I was a little bit worried I wouldn’t be able to offer everything that I possibly could with the ball, especially in the first innings,” he told Sky television.

In the series-decider, the visitors won the toss and asked the home team to bat first.

“But hopefully as the game goes on, and it settles down, I might be able to rock ‘n roll some offspin if needed!,” Stokes quipped.

He said he had not undergone much treatment as it was not clear exactly what the injury was.

“I’ve just tried to spend as much time off my feet resting and now we’ll just have to play it by ear.”

It is worth noting here that England have brought both James Anderson and Jofra Archer back into the attack with Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes retained from the second Test, implying that the hosts were anticipating less of a contribution with the ball from Stokes in the third Test.
