ENG v WI 2020: Coach Silverwood non-commital whether Broad will return for next Test

ENG v WI 2020: Coach Silverwood non-commital whether Broad will return for next Test

The veteran pacer was left out for the first Test against West Indies in Southampton.

Stuart Broad | AFP England head coach Chris Silverwood didn't offer any assurance that veteran pacer Stuart Broad will return for the second Test of the ongoing home series against the West Indies.

Broad, England's second-highest Test wicket-taker, was left out of the playing XI for the Ageas Bowl, Southampton, with the team management opting for the extra pace of Mark Wood.

"Nothing is a given in this team, as we have seen, and people will be playing for their spots. Everything will be considered," AP quoted Silverwood as saying.

Broad, 34, expressed his displeasure at the call to drop him in an interview given mid-way through the Test to Sky Sports, saying he felt "frustrated, angry, gutted" over the decision taken by stand-in captain Ben Stokes and Silverwood.

"It is quite a hard decision to understand," he added. "I've probably bowled the best I've ever bowled in the last couple of years. I felt like it was my shirt, particularly winning the Ashes and going to South Africa and winning there."

"But we are also in a fairly unique position this summer - very rarely do you get all your bowlers fit, as we've got at this minute."

"Part of my strength and durability as a cricketer is that I've been fit on a lot of occasions and been available for selection. I felt like I deserved a spot in the team as would anyone else," Broad said.

Silverwood said a final decision on the playing XI for the second Test in Manchester, starting Thursday (July 16), will be taken after training.

"We have one or two stiff bodies, as you can imagine," he said. "I have been down to see the guys already but they all seem to have come through well."

"I mean, we will probably know more after training tomorrow. We will put them through their paces and see where they are at."

England lost the first Test by four wickets and is down 1-0 in the three-match Test series.
