India Women’s U19 T20 World Cup winning team to get INR 5 crs; Jay Shah invites them to Narendra Modi Stadium

Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh | GettyThe Indian Women’s U19 team under the captaincy of Shafali Verma created history by becoming the very first winners of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 as they defeated England in the final in Potchefstroom on Sunday.

Deciding to bowl first after winning the toss, Indian bowlers, especially Player of the Match Titas Sadhu (2/6), along with spinners Archana Devi (2/17) and Parshavi Chopra (2/13) restricted England to just 68 runs in 17.1 overs with Ryana MacDonald-Gay top-scoring with 19 runs.

Then in the chase, Soumya Tiwari (24*) and Gongadi Trisha made 24 runs, batted with caution, and added 46 runs for the third wicket and took India to the win with 7 wickets in the hand in 14 overs and made the team the very first Women’s U19 T20 World champions.

As a result, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has announced that the board will give the entire team INR 5 crores as a prize for their brilliant achievement while congratulating them on their T20 World Cup triumph.

Kudos to the India U19 team for winning the #U19T20WorldCup.This is a phenomenal achievement as our young cricketers have made the country proud. That the young players weren’t overawed by the big occasion speaks volume about their steely characters and temperament,” Shah tweeted.

Women’s Cricket in India is on the upswing and the World Cup triumph has taken the stature of women’s cricket several notches higher. I am delighted to announce INR 5 crore for the entire team and support staff as prize money. This is surely a path-breaking year,” he added.

Not only this, Jay Shah also invited the Shafali Verma-led champion team to the Narendra Modi Stadium on February 1st in the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to watch the 3rd T20I between India and New Zealand and for celebrations.

He posted: “I invite @TheShafaliVerma and her victorious team to join us at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad and witness the third T20I on 1st February. This humongous achievement surely calls for a celebration.@BCCI  @BCCIWomen.”
