U19CWC 2020: Bangladesh beats India to lift their maiden U19 World Cup trophy

Bangladesh became the third Asian nation to become U19 champions of the world.

Yashasvi Jaiswal made 88 | GettyThe super league final of the ICC U19 World Cup 2020 was played between India and Bangladesh at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. Both the teams came into this finale undefeated, with India being the defending champions.

Bangladesh won the toss and Akbar chose to bowl first. Owing to the moisture, Bangladesh bowlers took the advantage and bowled brilliantly as Indian batsmen took an over-cautious approach to the game. This resulted in India reaching their 100-run mark well after 27 overs. Tilak Varma made 38 and Jurel made 22, while Yashasvi Jaiswal made 88 to lead India to 156/4.

But they lost the remaining wickets in a spectacular collapse and ended up with a below-par score of 177 in 47.2 overs. Avishek Das picked 3/40, while Shoriful Islam and Tanzim Sakib picked two wickets apiece.

India knew they had to pick wickets, but the Bangladeshi cubs decided to go for runs. This gave the opposition a chance to pick wickets and Ravi Bishnoi did the damage with 4/30 in his 10 overs. Unfortunately, Kartik Tyagi and Akash Singh failed to pick any wickets and Indian bowlers gave away way too many runs as extras.

Parvez Emon made 47 to anchor the chase | GettyParvez Emon (47) and captain Akbar Ali (43*) took the team past the finish line, as the target was revised to 170 thanks to a short burst of rain. Finally, the required runs were made and Bangladesh defeated India to lift their first-ever ICC U19 World Cup trophy.

For the defending champions, a very over-cautious approach while batting and too many extras may be the reason that be discussed due to which they couldn’t manage to beat the Bangladeshi team.
