"Is it even gonna happen", Steyn unsure of T20 World Cup due to COVID-19 pandemic

The showpiece event is due to be held in Australia from October 18 to November 15.

Dale Steyn | GettySouth Africa great Dale Steyn isn't sure whether this year's T20 World Cup in Australia will be played on time or not, considering the growing threat of uncertainty over the tournament's future amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 36-year-old pacer gave his opinion on the showpiece event during an #AskDale question-answer session with his fans over Twitter.

"Is it even gonna happen...?", tweeted Steyn in reply to a query with regards to his eagerness to take part in Proteas' quest for the big trophy.

However, an ICC source close to the matter told ANI that as of now there is no plan for the tournament to be suspended.

"Nothing has changed since the board meeting release and no member is asking for a date change as of now," the source said.

The governing body had a board meeting on March 27 via teleconference to discuss the effect of the pandemic on all cricket, as immediate international and domestic fixtures remain under suspension because of the deadly outbreak.

Doubts over the future of the T20 World Cup, due to be played between October 18 till November 15, were first raised when the Australian government decided to impose a six-month lockdown on the country.

"In response to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Local Organising Committee is monitoring the situation closely with relevant authorities, and will continue to do so," ICC had said in a statement.

"The ICC Men's T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place from 18 October - 15 November 2020 in seven venues across Australia. We are planning for the event to go ahead as scheduled."
