Preparations are in full-flow for the T20 World Cup in Australia where Team India will look to reign supreme in the format after more than a decade since claiming the great crown with its youngistaan in South Africa.

And in the process of building a good enough squad, the bilateral T20Is played in the interim are being used to try different individuals and see whether they can cement a place for themselves at a given role, reiterated one of the team's lock-ins, vice-captain and limited-overs giant, Rohit Sharma. 

"It is a long way from the World Cup. We are preparing for that, (and) a lot of guys are getting ready for that. (It) means there are a lot of spots we need to fill. It is a work in progress," Rohit told Hindustan Times.

"Anyway, the 15-20 guys we have are all really good and have performed really well and are very confident. It is just about doing what we need to do in Australia and then try and win that World Cup."

India is currently playing Sri Lanka after having tackled South Africa, Bangladesh and defending world champions West Indies through the season. The team will go to New Zealand for five games later in January and play quite a few more T20Is in the build-up to the big summer down under. 

On a personal note, Rohit would look to continue to the amazing work done in the previous year where he pulverized opposition attacks during the 50-over World Cup in the UK and took great first steps also opening the innings for India in Test cricket. 

"It is always nice to get runs and do well for the team, but for what purpose you went there, if that is not achieved, then you are not happy," he said. "Personally, I can say I batted well and all that, but we didn’t win the World Cup. That was disappointing, so the hundreds I scored will not matter so much. If with that hundred we could have won the tournament, I would have been two times happier."

In tough New Zealand, Rohit will be hoping to reassert his dominance as a force in white-ball cricket and clear up doubts over his ability to handle the moving red ball. "It will be a great challenge," he said. "New Zealand is a very formidable team. They play as a team and are very good in planning and executing. That is what makes them a very dangerous team, and in their backyard, they play really well. I have been there before so I know what to expect."

"I have been around the world enough to understand what to expect and I will first get my mindset ready and then I will start preparing once we get to New Zealand because we have a few series before that," Rohit added. 

"It is a good challenge, but I am not looking that I want to score overseas. I want to score everywhere. The bottom line is if I am playing cricket I want to score everywhere."
