Batting stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's praise after Team India's triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024.
The Men in Blue defeated South Africa by seven runs in a nail-biting final at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday (June 29) to clinch their second T20 World Cup title.
Following India's win, PM Modi called the team to congratulate them. He hailed Rohit’s leadership and also commended Kohli for his significant knock of 76 runs in the title clash.
On Monday (July 1), both Rohit and Kohli thanked the Prime Minister on social media for his words of appreciation.
"Thank you so much @narendramodi sir for your kind words. The team and I are very proud to be able to bring the cup home and are truly touched by how much happiness it has brought everyone back home," Rohit wrote on X.
On the other hand, Kohli tweeted: “Dear @narendramodi sir, thank you so much for your very kind words and your support and encouragement always. It has been a privilege to be a part of this team which has brought the cup home. We are deeply touched & overwhelmed with the happiness it has bought the entire nation.”
Over the last year 11 years, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had given their best in numerous ICC events but they were not being able to take the team beyond the finishing line.
In fact, India had lost as many as five ICC finals since the 2013 Champions Trophy win. Hence, this victory came as a big relief for the Men in Blue.
Soon after the triumph, the two star batters announced their retirement from T20Is, paving the way for young generation to take the Indian team forward in the shortest format of the game.
