India PM Narendra Modi sent across his congratulations to Team India, who won the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados on Saturday, June 29. India defeated South Africa in the final of the tournament to win their second T20 world title.
India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first. Thanks to Virat Kohli’s 76 and Akshar Patel’s 47, India posted 176/6 in 20 overs.
In reply, Heinrich Klaasen (52), Quinton de Kock (39) and Tristan Stubbs (31), threatened to take the game away from India. But brilliant spells by Hardik Pandya (3/20) and two wickets each by Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, helped India restrict South Africa to 169/7.
India won by 7 runs and became two-time champions. Virat Kohli won the Player of the Final and Jasprit Bumrah was named the Player of the Tournament.
In the aftermath, India PM Narendra Modi took to social media and congratulated the Indian team on their victory.
The post was captioned as: "CHAMPIONS! Our team brings the T20 World Cup home in STYLE! We are proud of the Indian cricket team. This match was HISTORIC"
Narendra Modi also dialled the Indian team and spoke individually with captain Rohit Sharma, coach Rahul Dravid and star batter Virat Kohli.
The Prime Minister thanked coach Rahul Dravid , whose two-and-a-half-year-long tenure as Team India's Head Coach came to a close after yesterday's match, for his contribution to Indian cricket.
