Afghanistan public rushed out on to the streets to celebrate their team’s qualification in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. Afghanistan, led by Rashid Khan, made history by doing so after they defeated Bangladesh in their last Super 8s stage encounter.

Defending a modest total of 115 for five on a bowler-friendly surface, Afghan captain Rashid Khan overcame three rain delays, a slippery ball, and a revised target of 114 off 19 overs to take four for 23 as Bangladesh, who had faint hopes of making the final four, were dismissed for 105 off 17.5 overs.

An undefeated 54 from opener Litton Das threatened to lead Bangladesh to victory and earn Australia the final semi-final position based on net run rate.

However, pacer Naveen Ul Haq got the final two wickets - Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman - with consecutive deliveries in the penultimate over of the match, triggering wild Afghan celebrations.

With India defeating Australia earlier in the day and proceeding to the second semi-final against England in Guyana on Thursday, the Afghans secured second place in the group, eliminating the Aussies and Bangladeshis.

Afghanistan will now play South Africa in the first semi-final in Trinidad on Wednesday.

The streets in Afghanistan erupted with celebrations after the team qualified for the semi-finals and scenes were emotional and joyous to see.
