Afghanistan team created history by defeating Bangladesh in their last Super 8s game of the T20 World Cup 2024 and qualified for the semi-final of the tournament. This is the first time Afghanistan have made it into the knockouts of any ICC event.
Afghanistan bowlers successfully defended the revised target of 114 runs in 19 overs against Bangladesh, despite Litton Das’ 54*. Rashid Khan and Naveen Ul Haq starred with four wickets each. With this win, Afghanistan also knocked out Australia from the race of semi-finals.
Afghanistan will now face South Africa in the first semi-final in Trinidad, while India and England will clash in the second knockout game in Guyana, with both matches to be played on June 26.
The match wasn’t without its controversies as just before the second rain break during the game, Gulbadin Naib went down with hamstring injury in slips. This was after coach Jonathan Trott signalled to the team to slow things down.
The all-rounder received treatment on the field and was helped off the field but made a recovery to come back on to the field after the game resumed. He recovered enough to come and bowl the 15th over and pick one wicket.
And after the Afghanistan won the game, Gulbadin Naib seemingly made a full recovery from the 'hamstring injury' he had suffered. He was seen participating in the team celebrations in the bus and danced his heart out in a video shared by Mohammad Nabi on social media.
