Team India’s final Group A game against Canada in the T20 World Cup 2024 was abandoned due to a wet outfield at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Florida on Saturday (June 15).
There was a cloud cover but no rain and still no play was possible as a result of the morning showers, which had dampened the outfield.
While the groundstaff worked tirelessly to get the ground ready, the outfield was too wet for play as the match was called off just over an hour after its scheduled start time.
A day earlier, the USA versus Ireland game was called off under similar circumstances at the same venue. There was no rain on the match day but the heavy showers a day before left the outfield in dire state for the game to take place.
Disappointed by the back-to-back abandoned games, legendary India opener Sunil Gavaskar and former England skipper Michael Vaughan lashed out at the ICC for not having enough covers to cover the entire ground.
"You just can't cover the pitch and let the other parts of the ground get wet," said Gavaskar on Star Sports after asking ICC not to schedule matches at venues that do not have enough covers.
On the other hand, Vaughan tweeted: “How we don’t have more covers to cover all the ground is beyond me .. all the money in the game yet we still get games called off for wet outfields !!!! #T20WorldCup #USA”.
Already out of the Super 8 race, Pakistan and Ireland are due to play in Florida on Sunday (June 16) and it will be interesting to see whether ICC gets into action regarding the covers situation.
USA staged 16 matches in the group-stage along with fellow tournament hosts West Indies. Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas and the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York are the two other tournament venues in the United States.
All matches of the Super 8 round in addition to semi-finals and final will be held in the Caribbean islands.
