Riding on Tabraiz Shamsi's impressive four-wicket haul, South Africa defeated Nepal by just one run in their Group D match of the T20 World Cup 2024 in St Vincent on Saturday (June 15).
Chasing 116 to win, Nepal were always in the game as their batters stitched good partnerships. However, Shamsi's spell turned the tables in favour of the Proteas as they restricted Nepal to 114/7 and secured the victory on the last delivery.
Besides Shamsi (4/19 in 4 overs), Anrich Nortje (1/27 in 4 overs) and Aiden Markram (1/8 in 2 overs) returned with one scalp each for South Africa.
Aasif Sheikh was the top the scorer for Nepal with 42 off 39 balls while Anil Sah made a handy contribution of 24-ball 27 in a low-scoring affair. However, they failed to take their team over the finishing line.
While South Africa made it 4 out of 4 in the group stage, this result implied that Nepal were officially eliminated from the ongoing T20 World Cup.
Gulshan Jha was the last man to be dismissed when Nepal needed two runs off one ball to win the match. He was left shell-shocked at the bowler's end after getting run-out as the South African players erupted into wild celebrations.
