Ahead of the IPL 2024 season, Hardik Pandya, who completed a high-profile trade from Gujarat Titans (GT) to Mumbai Indians (MI), replaced Rohit Sharma as skipper of the five-time champions.
However, the all-rounder failed to create an impact as captain. Having lost eight of their 12 matches, MI have already been knocked out of the playoffs race.
In the upcoming T20 World Cup, the tables will turn as Rohit will lead the Indian team, which also includes Hardik as vice-captain.
With three weeks remaining for the global showpiece event, former Australia captain Michael Clarke offered insights into the dynamics between Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya.
Amidst speculation of disharmony, Clarke expressed confidence in Rohit’s ability to support Hardik during tough times.
"Knowing Rohit Sharma, he will wrap his arms around Hardik Pandya. That shows the character that Rohit is. He is the Indian captain and trust me… he wants to win that World Cup," Clarke said on the Around the Wicket podcast.
Clarke's belief in Sharma's influence reflected on Pandya's inclusion in India's T20I World Cup squad despite the MI captain’s average showing in the ongoing IPL.
He remarked, "If the beef between Rohit and Hardik was as strong as people think, Hardik wouldn't be in that World Cup campaign. The Indian captain has that much power."
While acknowledging the potential division within the MI camp, Clarke recognized Pandya's talent and Sharma's support for him.
Hardik Pandya may have been enduring a lean patch in the IPL 2024, Clarke highlighted his potential to shine on the international stage.
"I think while there are obviously issues with how Rohit was released from his duties as captain of Mumbai Indians, I don't think that will affect their friendship, selection or Rohit Sharma. He will make sure Hardik is as focussed as possible. As long as Hardik is performing, Rohit knows how important he is for that Indian team," Clarke stated.
