“Knowing Virat very well, he wouldn’t…”: Faf du Plessis shares thoughts on Kohli’s participation in T20 World Cup 2024

Kohli selection for the T20 World Cup 2024 has become a major topic of debate these days.

Virat Kohli | GettyThe selection of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the T20 World Cup 2024 has become a major topic of debate in Indian cricket these days.

The two batting stalwarts haven’t played a T20I since the Indian team’s T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final exit.

While many cricket experts want the selectors to go with the young team for the upcoming T20 World Cup, some still believe that Rohit and Kohli have a lot to offer in the shortest format.

Recently, a report published in Dainik Jagran claimed that Rohit will be leading the national side in the T20 World Cup 2024 but Kohli isn’t in the scheme of things for the marquee tournament.

Amidst all this, former South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis feels Virat Kohli will feature in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.

“Yeah, I think so. Certainly, if you look at the staging right now. The T20 World Cup is not far away. So it feels like everything in the reach. If you talk about the next 50-over World Cup, that’s where players will go ‘that’s too far away’ and maybe that’s something I don’t see them playing that,” Du Plessis said in an interview with NDTV.

Faf du Plessis further stated that he knows Virat Kohli very well and the latter wouldn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to win the coveted trophy. He also said that Rohit Sharma too would be keen to play in the mega event.

He added: “But knowing Virat very well, he wouldn’t want to miss out on the opportunity of the T20 World Cup, to get the trophy. That’s why we play the game, he was so close this time around. Rohit would be no different, I thought they both were excellent at home and they would want to make sure that they are geared up.”

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli didn’t participate in the five-match T20I series against Australia after the ODI World Cup and they have been rested for the white-ball leg of the upcoming South Africa tour as well.

It remains to be seen if Rohit and Kohli feature in the home T20I series against Afghanistan, starting January 11.
