India coach Rahul Dravid said that it was too early to talk about any transition happening in the T20I side despite its humiliating exit from the T20 World Cup 2022 after the 10-wicket loss to England in the second semi-final at Adelaide on Thursday, November 10, 2022.
There were talks about multiple senior players being eased out of the format keeping in mind the next T20 World Cup will be played in 2024. There are questions being raised on the future of the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R Ashwin in the T20I format going forward now.
During the post-match press conference, Rahul Dravid was asked about the same and he said that India had a couple of years to reflect on the performances of seniors like Rohit and Kohli.
“It’s too early to talk about it right now just after a semi-final game. These guys have been terrific performers for us. Like you said, we have a couple of years to reflect on it. There are some really good quality players here, so absolutely not the right time to talk about this stuff or think about this stuff right now. We’ll have enough games, enough matches as we go on ahead, and India will try and build and prepare for the next World Cup," the head coach replied to PTI query.
On the other hand, a BCCI source told PTI that BCCI will leave it to Kohli and Rohit to decide on their T20I future. However, the likes of Dinesh Karthik and R Ashwin have seemingly played their last matches in this format.
“The BCCI never asks anyone to retire. It is an individual decision. But yes, with just a handful of T20Is scheduled in 2023, most of the seniors will concentrate on ODIs and Test matches in that cycle. You don’t need to announce retirement if you don’t want to. You will not see most of the seniors playing T20 next year,” the BCCI source told PTI.
The next T20 World Cup is still two years away and if those privies to developments is to be believed, there will be a brand-new team in place with Hardik Pandya being the long-term captaincy choice.
