T20 World Cup 2022: ‘Aisi ulti-seedhi statement naa dein…’ Sehwag slams Shakib for his comments ahead of India clash

Shakib Al Hasan had said that Bangladesh defeating India would be an “upset.”

Shakib Al Hasan | GettyBangladesh suffered a heartbreaking five-run defeat (DLS method) at the hands of India at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday (November 2).

Chasing 185 to win, the Tigers got off to a blazing start as Litton Das took the Indian bowling attack to the cleaners. Thanks to his 21-ball half-century in the powerplay, Bangladesh reached 66/0 after 7 overs before the rain entered and the overs had to be curtailed.

While Bangladesh were 17 runs ahead of the DLS par score when the rain arrived, they got the revised target of 151 in 16 overs when the game resumed.

Soon after the rain interruption, Litton Das got run out for 60 off 27 balls while the Indian bowlers held their nerves to restrict Bangladesh to 145/6.

After the game, former India opener Virender Sehwag slammed Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan for his bizarre comments ahead of the all-important fixture.

On the eve of the match, Shakib addressed a press conference where he said that his team is not here to win the tournament and if they end up beating India, it would be an upset.

“Iss baat ki responsibility toh captain ko leni chahiye na. Uss se pehle Shanto out hue, fir ussi over me Shakib bhi out ho gaye. Toh vo, vahan par galti ho gayi. 99/3, 100/4, 102/5, ye 3 wicket jo gire hain, inme ek saajhedaari ban jaati... aisa nahi hai ki T20 me aapko 50 runs ki saajhedaari chahiye. 10 ball me 20 run ki partnership bhi game palat sakti hai. (The captain should take responsibility. Shanto was dismissed before, and Shakib got out in the same over. They lose three quick wickets, if there had been one partnership… it isn't as if you need a 50-run partnership in T20s. A 20-run partnership in 10 balls can also change the game),” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

“Mere khyaal se chook ho gayi, khud kaptaan se bhi. Vo kaptaan hain, experience bhi hai, responsibility bhi lein aur khele ant tak, jaise Kohli khelte hain. Team ko majhdaar se nikaalein, ya fir aisi ulti-seedhi statement naa dein. (I think the captain also missed a trick. He has experience, he should take responsibility and play till the end like Kohli. He should've taken the team out of trouble, or else he shouldn't make such nonsense statement),” he added.

Shakib Al Hasan failed to make a mark with the bat against India, scoring 13 off 12 balls in the run-chase, departing in the 13th over when Bangladesh still needed 51 runs to win in 26 deliveries.
