T20 World Cup 2022: “You have the power to pull the trigger…” opines Pat Cummins on run out at non-striker’s end

Mitchell Starc recently warned Jos Buttler for backing up too far at the non-striker's end.

In the three-match ODI series between India and England women’s team last month, Deepti Sharma smartly ran Charlie Dean out at the non-striker's end to secure India's victory and a historic whitewash over the hosts.

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has moved this mode of dismissal from the "Unfair Play" section to the "Run out" section, with the International Cricket Council's approval.

Despite the fact that it is now a part of the rules, many former and current cricketers have differing views on the matter. One group believes that it is a fair dismissal, while the other believes that it goes against the "spirit of the game."

The latest to weigh in on the matter is Australia pacer, Pat Cummins. According to Cummins, the act has changed from something that was considered to be against the spirit of the game to something that teams can now use as a tactical choice.

Mitchell Starc warned Jos Buttler during the recently held third T20I between Australia and England, saying that he may or may not consider ‘Mankading’ him but the latter must remain in the crease.

“It's weird time in that I think it's transitioning from something that was maybe frowned upon to something that is considered just a run-out. I think it's just a reminder to kind of show that you have the power to pull the trigger if you want to. I am not sure every bowler will but, just warning the batsman that they've got to be careful,” Cummins told reporters.

The star pacer further remarked that he personally may never do it as it seems just too much work for him to go through his entire run-up to attempt a run-out

“When I am running in I don't see them at all. I think Josh Hazlewood said the other day that it is way too far to run in, to give a warning, or to attempt a run-out. It's a waste of energy," he said.

Australia will begin their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign against New Zealand on Saturday (October 22) at the SCG.
