Unfair to Rohit and Virat if captaincy is changed 3-4 months before T20 World Cup, opines Dasgupta

Kohli's captaincy was again under the scanner after loss to New Zealand in WTC 2021 final.

Rohit Sharma (L) and Virat Kohli (R) | GettyEven though Virat Kohli is one of the most successful captains India has ever had. But his inability to win an ICC trophy has brought his captaincy under the scanner.

Fans and pundits wonder if it would be better for someone else to take over the captaincy, especially in the shortest format.

Former India wicket-keeper batsman Deep Dasgupta has joined this discussion of having split captaincy as he believes India will get a solution after the conclusion of this upcoming T20 World Cup 2021.

I won't say 'high time' but I would say Rohit is definitely an option. I think a lot will depend on the T20 World Cup because as of now it's very difficult. You have just 3-4 months ahead of you, you will change the captaincy, which will mean that the team will have to align with the style of the new captain, Dasgupta said in his latest YouTube video.

The cricketer-turned-commentator then addressed the fact that even though Rohit Sharma has led this Indian team before, there is a difference between a stand-in captain and a full-time captain as well as how it will be ‘unfair’ to make a change at the moment.

Even though Rohit has led the side before, there's a difference between a stand-in skipper and a full-time skipper because as the former you don't want to make too many changes. When you are a full-time skipper, obviously, you want to make changes because you want to run the team your way,” he said.

I believe it will be unfair on Rohit, the team, and also Virat now just 3-4 months before [the World Cup]. But I think the T20 World Cup will be very, very important in that aspect, because if something goes wrong there then Rohit is one of the main contenders for that spot,” the 44-year-old signed off.
