Former Pakistani pacer Mohammad Amir has made a stunning statement on India’s future in the T20 World Cup 2026 tournament. This statement came after he had termed India opener Abhishek Sharma as a slogger. And now he has said that he doesn’t see India qualifying for the semi-finals of the ICC event.
Amir believes that India, led by Suryakumar Yadav and unbeaten in the previous three ICC tournaments, will not be able to advance past Super 8s Group A.
India advanced to the Super 8s without losing a single game thus far after defeating the Netherlands in their final group stage game on Wednesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, the performance has been far from pitch-perfect, with the batting side leaving much to be desired.
Abhishek Sharma has not opened his account in three games he has batted, and Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma have struggled in the middle overs to hit the big shots and score quickly.
Seeing how the Indian batting has performed thus far, Amir said that teams like South Africa and the West Indies can take full advantage of India's shortcomings.
During the 'Haarna Mana Hai' TV show, the anchor asked Amir about his semi-final predictions from Group A of the Super 8, to which he replied, "South Africa and the West Indies."
When the anchor stated that he does not believe India will make it to the final four, Amir shook his head angrily.
“If you see their matches, the batting collapsed in all the games, barring the Pakistan contest. The pressure will rise in the Super 8 matches. The way in which South Africa and the West Indies have been playing, they can beat any team,” Amir said on the Darna Mana Hai show, while explaining why he doesn't think India would make it to the semi-finals.
India's Super 8s campaign will begin on Sunday, February 22, against South Africa in Ahmedabad. The team will then fly to Chennai to face Sikandar Raza's Zimbabwe on Thursday, February 26. India's final Super 8s match versus the West Indies will be contested on March 1 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
The second group in the Super 8s will see Pakistan, New Zealand, England, and Sri Lanka fight it out for two semi-final spots. Amir picked Pakistan and New Zealand as the two teams that will make it out of Group B to make it to the last four.
