Former India captain Rohit Sharma, who is also the ambassador for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, was seen at the Wankhede Stadium on February 7, 2026, where India took on the USA in their tournament opener.
Rohit Sharma walked out with the T20 World Cup trophy, which he had won as India captain in the 2024 edition in the USA and the West Indies.
In his first World Cup as captain of India, Suryakumar Yadav saw Rohit Sharma walking by as he went out for the toss. India's T20 captain rushed over to Rohit, moved away from the toss area, and gave his former captain a big hug without hesitation. The crowd at the legendary Wankhede Stadium cheered loudly as the moment immediately touched hearts.
Suryakumar was observed requesting prompt guidance from Rohit regarding the choice to make at the toss during the amicable time. Curiously, Rohit also suggested his method to the current captain, which caused Suryakumar to chuckle prior to the Wankhede Stadium toss.
Suryakumar Yadav, while hugging Rohit Sharma, asked, “Jaldi bolo, batting karu yaa fielding karu? (Tell me quickly, should I bat or field first?) ”. Then, Rohit said before laughing, “Fielding Kar… Pagal Hain Kya!!”
Looking at the dressing room balcony, an emotional Rohit said, “It feels weird here. It feels weird from there to here.”
Rohit thought about how players frequently become so preoccupied with duty and pressure that they forget to savor the moment, and he advised all players to do so because such times are fleeting.
“In the midst of everything, you sometimes don't realize you've got to enjoy the moment as well. Enjoy every game as well. This moment will never come back. Being in India is never going to be easy,” Rohit added.
Rohit was emotionally affected by being separated from the Indian cricket team. For the first time, he was standing with ICC match officials as the tournament ambassador rather than wearing the India shirt, which was a very emotional and unique experience for him.
“That's a very emotional feeling because I'm not still used to it, being on this side of the field rather than being on that side of the field. For once, I felt there was no nerve in my body. What a wonderful experience standing there and singing the national anthem. Feels very different and emotional,” he added.
