“They don’t win anything,” Michael Vaughan calls India most underachieving cricket team

Vaughan's comment came after India's loss to South Africa in the Centurion Test.

India lost the Centurion Test by an innings and 32 runs | GettyFormer England skipper Michael Vaughan reiterated his old statement, calling India an "underachieving team" after the Rohit Sharma-led side suffered an innings and 32-run defeat in the opening Test against South Africa at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

Speaking on Fox Sports, Vaughan stressed on the lack of achievement by the Indian team despite having plenty of resources at their disposal.

Notably, Team India haven’t won an ICC tournament since 2013. This year alone, India lost the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the Cricket World Cup final to Australia.

“Do you think, in terms of cricket, India are one of the most underachieving sports teams in the world?” Vaughan asked Australian batting legend Mark Waugh, who is also part of the Fox Sports commentary panel.

Waugh returned back the question instead and then Vaughan said: “They haven’t won much in recent times. I think they are [an underachieving side]. They don’t win anything. When was the last time they won something? With all the talent they have, all the skill-set.

“They’ve won in Australia twice [Test series in 2018/19 and 2020/21]. Magnificent, but the last few World Cups, been nowhere, in the last few T20 World Cups, been nowhere. They’re a good team, have got plenty of talent but with all the talent they have and the resource they have, I just don’t think they win.”

With the Centurion Test loss, India also conceded an unassailable 1-0 lead to South Africa in the two-match Test series.

The second and final Test is due to be held in Cape Town from January 3 to January 7.
