Temba Bavuma | GettyFormer South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs on Tuesday (December 26) slammed Temba Bavuma, calling the Proteas Test skipper unfit and overweight.

Bavuma limped off the field after picking up an injury on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test against India at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

Dean Elgar, who is featuring in his farewell Test series, took over the captaincy following Bavuma’s injury in the morning session of the Test match.

The incident took place during the 20th over of India’s first innings. The South African captain sustained a strain on his left hamstring when he was chasing to stop a shot from Indian batter Virat Kohli.

“Ironic that the coach allows some players who are clearly unfit and overweight to play when he started off as proteas trainer in 2009,” Gibbs wrote on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).

Coming to the match, KL Rahul stood up tall for India in tough batting conditions at SuperSport Park. The wicketkeeper-batter returned with an impressive unbeaten 70, propelling the visitors to 208/8 on a rain-marred opening day.

Kagiso Rabada starred with the ball for South Africa on Day 1, taking five wickets by conceding 44 runs in his 17 overs. Nandre Burger also claimed a couple of scalps.
