Rohit Sharma produced a moment of absolute brilliance in the field to run out a well-set Daryl Mitchell during the first ODI between India and New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland on Wednesday (November 4).
On the first ball of the 22nd over, bowled by Axar Patel, Glenn Phillips nudged the ball gently toward the leg side and instinctively bolted down the crease looking for a quick single, causing a brief moment of hesitation and miscommunication with his batting partner Mitchell.
Stationed inside the inner ring at mid-wicket, Rohit anticipated the play flawlessly, sprinting rapidly before throwing his body into a full-length dive to his right. While tumbling and mid-air, the 39-year-old gathered the ball cleanly and released a precise, rapid underarm throw straight to the striker's end.
Wicketkeeper KL Rahul gathered the throw cleanly and whipped off the bails. Replays sent upstairs quickly confirmed that Mitchell was caught well short of his crease, walking back for 28 off 41 balls.
The athletic effort immediately went viral, sending a roaring statement to critics regarding Rohit Sharma’s fitness and fielding sharpness.
Daryl Mitchell’s wicket reduced New Zealand to 97/5, keeping India firmly in the driver's seat during the opening fixture of the five-match series.
