NZ v IND 2020: "We weren't at par with New Zealand", admits Kohli after 2-0 whitewash in Test series

India went down by huge margins in Wellington and Christchurch against New Zealand.

India lost the Test series 2-0 | GettyIndia captain Virat Kohli accepted his team left a lot to be desired over its performance in Wellington and Christchurch, suffering an extremely disappointing 2-0 Test series whitewash against New Zealand.

While the Indian batting line-up failed to cross the 250-run mark even once across the four innings, the bowling unit also only did well in patches.

The result hardly inspired confidence of the team's resurgence in Australia later this year and majorly dented its chances of making it to the World Test Championship final next year, looking at the fixture list ahead.

“We were not at par with New Zealand as far as competing every day of the test match goes," Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony at the Hagley Oval where the visitors lost by nine wickets in a three-day encounter.

"It can happen to a side when the other side plays better and you can go in a downward spiral."

“If we shy away from it, we’re not going to improve. So we need to accept we were not good enough in this series, we’ve got take it on the chin and improve those things," he added.

This was India's third major overseas series loss under Kohli's captaincy, either side of wins in Australia and West Indies.

"There was just not enough done by the batsmen in this series for the bowlers to try and attack," the skipper said.

"I think to win a series away from home, you need to have a balanced performance with both bat and ball and in the field as well. It was something we were not able to do in this series."

Toss fell twice in New Zealand's favour but Kohli played down talks of that being a major factor, especially considering India got the chance to bat first and set-up the game, historically it's best option to try and win abroad.

"It (toss) gave an extra advantage to the bowlers (Kiwi pacers) in the first two hours," he said. "But look, as an international side playing so well over the last two or three seasons, you are expected to go out there and try and understand those conditions and execute things accordingly. This time around we were not able to."
