India opener and limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma on Sunday (February 2) picked up an untimely injury while playing the fifth and final T20I versus New Zealand. 

Just as Rohit was beginning to find a new gear into his innings after a slow start, he pulled his calf muscle while going for a quick single during the 17th over of the Indian innings. 

Rohit was immediately attended by the medical staff before he decided to continue his innings. However, with the pain only aggravating thereafter, the half-centurion limped off the field and didn't take the field for the Kiwi run-chase.

There has been no official update on Rohit's injury ever since then by the BCCI, but as per KL Rahul, who had to take over from Rohit as the stand-in captain with regular skipper Virat Kohli rested, the right-hand batsman was expected to recover in the next couple of days. 

"Rohit's alright, unfortunate injury, hopefully, he should be fine in a couple of days,” Rahul said at the post-game presentation ceremony as India won the five-game T20I series 5-0. 

However, a report from PTI claims that Rohit wouldn't be able to recover on time and has been ruled out of the tour after being assessed by the BCCI. 

"He is out of the tour," a top BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

If Rohit is indeed ruled out, that would be extremely unfortunate for the Indian opener, who has been a dominating force in white-ball cricket and had recently begun to do well at the top of the order in Test cricket also. 

The injury to Rohit might open the door for Prithvi Shaw, who is part of the ODI squad as the back-up opener in absence of injured Shikhar Dhawan. 

The Test squad hasn't yet been announced by the selectors.
