Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have added another feather in their caps as an opening pair in ODI cricket. During the second ODI against New Zealand at Bay Oval on Saturday, the duo surpassed the legendary opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag to notch up their 14th 100-run partnership in the 50-over format.
During their illustrious career, Sachin and Sehwag had registered 13 100-run stands among themselves in ODIs. The pair of Rohit and Dhawan are currently placed at the fourth position in the all-time list of maximum 100-run opening stands.
The elite list is headed by Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, who both forged 21 100-run opening partnerships together. Australia’s swashbuckling duo of Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden are second on the list with 16 100-run opening partnerships while West Indies’ Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes are at the third slot with 15 such stands.
Opting to bat first, Rohit and Dhawan gave India a stellar start with 154-run stand for the first wicket. Both of them recorded sparkling half-centuries, but failed to convert it into hundreds.
While Trent Boult dismissed Shikhar for 66, Lockie Ferguson got rid of Sharma when the right-hander was 13-run short of his 23rd ODI ton. Later, a blistering innings from MS Dhoni (48* off 33 balls) and a 10-ball 22-run cameo from Kedar Jadhav propelled India to 324/4 in 50 overs.
