Shubman Gill is reportedly set to be named India’s ODI captain, replacing legendary Rohit Sharma. Gill was named the Indian Test captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the format and, most recently, was named the India T20I vice-captain before the Asia Cup 2026.
The upcoming limited-overs tour of Australia is probably going to be Rohit Sharma's final appearance in the Indian jersey, particularly as captain, if not as a batter, as questions about his long-term future in one-day international cricket grow.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee is naturally eager to give the new ODI captain time to settle in and get used to the spotlight before the 2027 ODI World Cup.
As per the RevSportz report, the official announcement of Gill's appointment as India's ODI captain is imminent, so there is no doubt about it. According to previous reports, current captain Rohit Sharma is eager to try to win the ODI World Cup again in two years and wants to play in the 50-over format. He doesn't have complete control over the call, though.
Rohit Sharma would need to perform big time in the Australia ODI series to keep the BCCI from making a hard call on his future. However, there are concerns over whether Rohit and even Virat Kohli, who has also retired from T20Is and Tests, would remain fit enough to continue scoring runs the way they did in the past given that India's ODI assignments are restricted till the 2027 World Cup.
Gill will eventually take Suryakumar Yadav's spot as India's T20I captain. The decision might be taken following the 2026 T20 World Cup, particularly because Suryakumar is currently 34 years old.
In the past, Indian cricket has benefited greatly from the conventional "one captain for all formats" approach. The selections are eager to stick with the same arrangement as well.
