Sam Billings recently led the Oval Invincibles to their third straight The Hundred Men’s title, defeating the Trent Rockets in the final at Lord’s on August 31. He received a lot of praise from ex-India spinner R Ashwin, who revealed the vastness of the keeper-batter’s enormous wealth.
But the former CSK spinner went on to say that even with his affluence, Billings maintains his humbleness.
Billings didn’t have a successful IPL career, scoring only 503 runs in 30 games, at a strike rate below 130 and an average below 20. After playing for the Delhi Daredevils (now the Delhi Capitals) from 2016 to 2017, the England player spent the following two seasons with CSK before joining the Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2022 season.
"Sam Billings is not a normal guy. He owns almost half of Kent. We keep cooks and maids in our houses, but in those countries, to have a chef is a huge deal. His house has separate people for housekeeping, laundry, etc. He comes from that background but is a really, really simple guy," Ashwin said on his YouTube show, Ash ki Baat.
Billings started his CSK career with 56 runs from 23 balls, including two fours and five sixes. The wicketkeeper-batsman's season, which was thought to be good, turned out to be a disappointment. He only scored 52 runs in his next nine games for the franchise, finishing the season with a pitiful average of 13.50.
"A player like Sam Billings is a hit in other formats; he has even performed very well in the ILT20. I remember he performed well for CSK for a few games but couldn't sustain that performance. So, he was out of the team. There is a lot of pressure on these foreign players. Because if four foreign players are allowed on a team, you will have to perform. The amount of professionalism puts a lot of pressure. If you don't perform in two to three games, you will be out of the team," Ashwin added.
Sam Billings also played 3 Tests, 28 ODIs, and 37 T20Is for England.
