Indian veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are set to have serious conversations with the BCCI officials after the Asia Cup 2025 about their future in international cricket.
The duo retired from T20Is in 2024 and from Tests in May this year. This leaves Kohli and Rohit only available for the ODI format. The next ODI series for India will be a three-match affair on the tour of Australia in October.
The BCCI officials will meet with Kohli and Rohit to discuss their future intentions, according to sources. The board is expected to let the two batting greats make the final decision.
The talks are probably going to happen when the Asia Cup is over. According to reports, the BCCI is eager to relieve Rohit of the responsibility of captaincy, and Shreyas Iyer may be named the ODI captain.
The most recent development follows Iyer's exclusion from the Asia Cup selection process, which will also see Shubman Gill return as the T20I team's vice captain.
Virat Kohli has a slim chance of overhauling Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most ODI runs, in case he manages to extend his international career for a few years. Kohli has over 14,000 runs in the format with 51 centuries and needs just over 4,000 more runs to break Tendulkar’s record.
Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, has scored 11,168 runs in 273 ODIs at an average of 48.76, including 32 centuries and 58 fifties. He also holds the unique record of scoring three double centuries in the format, including the highest ever individual score of 264.
