Shubman Gill had a prolific run in the recently held Test series against England. The newly-appointed Indian skipper amassed a staggering 754 runs in 10 innings, including four hundreds. His stunning exploits helped India level the series 2-2.

India's next challenge will be at the Asia Cup 2025, which will be played in the UAE in T20I format. One of the major selection headaches for the BCCI selectors in picking the squad will be on how to fit Gill. The 25-year-old has not played a T20I match since July 2024, amid the priority over Test cricket and ODIs.

After the blockbuster England tour, there has been a growing consensus over wanting Gill's return to the shortest format.

However, a report published in RevSportz claims that Shubman Gill might struggle to find a spot in what is being looked at as a “set team”.

“Sources close to developments say that Sanju Samson has scored three hundreds in his last 10 T20Is and has done well as an opener. It wouldn’t be fair to push him down the order and accommodate Gill. Abhishek Sharma is the number-one ranked T20 batter in the world while Tilak Varma is the second-ranked batter. India, under Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav, has sought to give clarity and continuity to the players,” the report stated.

With the top-order firing through Abhishek, Sanju and Tilak, Gill’s inclusion will certainly be unfair to others. Moreover, the continental tournament is like a rehearsal for the next year's T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played in India and Sri Lanka. Unless India’s settled top-order are exposed to tough situations in a high-stake event like the Asia Cup, one wouldn’t really know what they are capable of.

According to the report, IPL performances wouldn’t be the benchmark for selecting the team. Tilak and Samson didn’t produce good returns in IPL 2025, but they have done well for India and that’s what is expected to go in their favour. Rinku Singh too might retain his place in the national side despite having an underwhelming IPL season with KKR.
