Former colleague Shikhar Dhawan has come under fire from Harbhajan Singh and Rohit Sharma for showing up to their weddings with nothing and then leaving after having a "complete blast" and eating and drinking.
On October 29, 2015, in Jalandhar, former spinner Harbhajan wed actress Geeta Basra, his longtime girlfriend. On December 13 of the same year, Rohit and Ritika Sajdeh were married in Mumbai.
At the time, Dhawan was Rohit's opening partner. After a poor 2015 World Cup, the pair was regarded as one of the most formidable in white-ball cricket.
“Shikhar Dhawan came to our wedding. He danced a lot, ate, drank, and had an absolute blast. And while leaving, he slipped an envelope into my pocket. Maine kaha, ‘ye kya kar raha hai?’. Maine woh khola na, 101 chorh, ek rupiya nahi tha. Khaali. (I said there was no need. When I opened it, forget 101 rupees, it didn’t even have one rupee. It was totally empty!)” Harbhajan Singh recalled on his YouTube show with Geeta Basra.
Shagun envelopes are presented as a sign of blessings in Indian culture. They usually have money inside of them, along with a one-rupee coin.
Harbhajan asked Rohit and Ritika if Dhawan had handed them anything after telling the story.
“Kuch nahi. Naachke, khaake, aur peeke gaya tha (Nothing. He danced, ate, drank, and just left)," Rohit replied, prompting all four of them to break into laughter.
However, Rohit Sharma praised Shikhar Dhawan a lot when it came to cricket. He called him a classy batter and person. Together, Rohit and Dhawan scored 5,148 runs in 115 innings, fourth fourth-highest opening partnership in terms of runs in ODI history.
“Woh bhi kya banda hai, class! (What a guy he his, class) From childhood, we have been playing together, and we have done a lot of tours together. Before playing for India, we had done a tour to Australia for India A," Rohit said.
Dhawan retired from all forms of competitive cricket in August last year. Rohit has also hung up his T20I and Test boots but continues to be available in ODI cricket.
