"Virat and Rohit shouldn’t have retired from Tests”- Yograj Singh says baton thrown to Shubman Gill

Yograj Singh also revealed that he had promised Yuvraj Singh he would make him India captain.

Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma | GettyYograj Singh, a former Indian cricketer, criticized the premature Test retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill, who is still trying to prove himself as a reliable red-ball player, was named the next Test captain after the key retirements forced India into a transitional phase with little preparation.

Following the retirements of R Ashwin, Rohit, and Kohli, the Indian side will begin the upcoming World Test Championship with a five-match Test series against England.

With some new players like Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and return man Karun Nair in the squad, Shubman and his staff will have a big challenge during the England tour as they try to make the transition as seamless as possible.

The two batting mainstays' retirements were questioned by Yograj, the father of seasoned all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who maintained that they still had five years of Test cricket left in them.

"Virat and Rohit shouldn’t have retired from Tests. I told Rohit to get up at 5 AM and run for 20 km to keep himself fit. Virat and Rohit can still play for another 5 years in Test cricket. They should have played," Yograj told Inside Sport.

According to Yograj, who is renowned for his direct and audacious views, Rohit and Kohli failed to pass the torch to the younger players.

“They should be there to see that the baton is passed to the youngsters. The baton has not been passed; it has been thrown to Gill.

Even when Yuvraj was retiring, I promised him that I would help him become India's captain and that we would throw everybody out, but he quit," he added.

In addition to reflecting on his son Yuvraj Singh's departure, the former cricket player said that he, too, left the game too soon and disregarded his advice.

Rohit Sharma called time on his Test career after 67 games and 4301 runs with 12 centuries to his name. Virat Kohli hung up his boots after 123 Tests with 9230 runs with 30 centuries.
