Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli recently called time on their Test careers, leaving a big void in the Indian team ahead of the all-important England tour that marks the beginning of the new WTC cycle.
Having retired from T20Is last year, both stalwarts will now focus solely on the One-Day International format.
In an interaction with RevSportz, India all-rounder Shardul Thakur offered his perspective on their Test retirement. He feels the duo may have hung up boots knowing that they may not be able to contribute or drive the format as before.
“They are the most senior figures in the game, but such decisions are personal. It comes when they feel they can’t contribute or drive the format as before,” Thakur said.
Shardul Thakur went on to say that the presence of Rohit and Kohli did offer a lot of protection for others in the side and having a good mix of youth and experience produces good results.
“There is a great deal of protection when senior players are around, and having a good mix of senior and junior players in the team provides flourishing results.”
Shardul emphasized Ravindra Jadeja’s role in the team since Rohit and Kohli have now retired. The all-rounder said that the upcoming tour of England will test everyone, including the new leaders in the team.
While Shubman Gill has been appointed India’s new Test skipper, Rishabh Pant has been named his deputy.
“Jaddu is now the most experienced. This tour will test everyone, with new responsibilities, including leadership roles.”
“It’s a fresh challenge, but we have the talent. Young players must seize this opportunity to build their own legacy,” Shardul said.
Shardul Thakur said the biggest challenge in England will be tackling the weather as one could see three seasons in a single day.
“I think weather is the biggest challenge in England. In one day, you can see all three weathers. It gets suddenly cold. When the sun is out it is nice and warm. And when it’s cloudy, it’s starts drizzling again,” he remarked.
The five-Test series between India and England is slated to get underway on June 20 at Headingley, followed by matches at Lord's (June 28), Trent Bridge (July 6), The Oval (July 14), and Old Trafford (July 24).
