Weeks after they parted ways, the BCCI reportedly decided to keep T Dilip on as the fielding coach for the Indian men's team for another year. Last month, the BCCI abruptly fired batting coach Abhishek Nayar in addition to Dilip.
Dilip, who will lead India on their five-match Test tour of England beginning on June 20, was invited back by the board after they were unable to identify a suitable substitute.
Former Test and T20I captain Rohit Sharma was instrumental in persuading head coach Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI to retain Dilip, according to Cricbuzz.
According to sources cited by Cricbuzz, Rohit personally asked Gambhir to rehire the Hyderabadi, who was reportedly handed a one-year deal, after announcing his Test retirement earlier this month.
“Dilip is a good coach, who served the team well for over three years (from 2021). He knows most of these cricketers very closely. So, to have him on board for a big series (vs England) will do the team only good. So, there is no point in bringing in a fresh name at this stage, and Dilip is very popular with players too,” a source close to the development told news agency PTI.
According to reports, the BCCI was eager to hire a foreign coach for fielding but was unable to locate a qualified applicant in the allotted period.
Due to his introduction of "fielding medals," which were given to the top player in every game, Dilip gained popularity among Indian players and on social media throughout his tenure.
India's new captain, Shubman Gill, will play England in five Test matches. Rishabh Pant will be his vice-captain. The next cycle of the ICC World Test Championship will start with the series.
