Rohit Sharma is widely regarded as one of the best captains in the modern-day game. He has led Mumbai Indians (MI) to five IPL titles and also captained his national team with great success.
Under his leadership, India have won two Asia Cup titles and equal number of ICC trophies – Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025.
Such has been the dominance of Team India in the ICC white-ball tournaments that they have lost only one out of 24 matches, with the defeat coming against Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup final at Ahmedabad.
Having already bid farewell to T20 Internationals after last year’s World Cup win, Rohit called time on his Test career on Wednesday (May 7). He will now focus solely on leading the national side in ODIs.
In an interview with journalist Vimal Kumar, Rohit Sharma dropped a big hint about his future plans as he spoke candidly about the heartbreak of the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
Rohit didn’t deny when asked if he has set the goal of playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, slated be held in South Africa.
"Zehem mein bilkul hai (on playing ODI World Cup 2027). Bilkul [It’s definitely on my mind. Absolutely]," Rohit said.
"Acha rahega agar aisa hua to (on adding the ODI World Cup to his cabinet) [It would be great if that happens]," he added.
Rohit Sharma ended his Test career with 4,301 runs coming from 67 matches at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties. He led India in 24 Tests, winning 12 and losing nine games.
“Hello, everyone. I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites,” Rohit wrote on his Instagram story.
“Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” he added.
