Rohit Sharma is widely regarded as one of the best captains in the modern-day game. He has led Mumbai Indians (MI) to five IPL titles and also captained his national team with great success.

Under his leadership, India have won two Asia Cup titles and equal number of ICC trophies – Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025.

Such has been the dominance of Team India in the ICC white-ball tournaments that they have lost only one out of 24 matches, with the defeat coming against Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup final at Ahmedabad.

In a special interview with the Mumbai Indians, India skipper Rohit Sharma reflected on his team’s glorious run in ICC events.

“It all started back in 2022 when we played in the World Cup in Australia. Although we didn’t make it to the finals and lost in the semi-finals, we made it clear to the players what we expected from them moving forward. We communicated how we wanted them to play, ensuring there was clarity,” Rohit said.

“We emphasised that, in order to perform, the team needed to play with freedom, without fear. While we had some lows, including losing a few series, we didn’t panic. We stayed true to our mindset,” he added.

Rohit mentioned that it would have been incredible if India had won all 24 of their games, but he also noted that a single defeat was acceptable. He was elated after India overcame tough challenges to achieve success in ICC tournaments.

“When building a squad, the first step is to reflect on what the team needs and where we fell short in previous series or tournaments. We constantly worked on answering those questions. If you look at what this team has achieved in the last three major ICC tournaments, it’s incredible – just one defeat, and that was in the final.

“Imagine if we had won that too. To go undefeated in three major ICC tournaments is unheard of. Winning 23 out of 24 games is unheard of. Yes, the journey looked impressive on the outside, but the team has experienced many highs and lows. There were tough times, but when you accomplish something like this, it’s worth celebrating,” he remarked.

Rohit Sharma is currently in the midst of the IPL 2025 season for Mumbai Indians. He bagged a four-ball duck in MI’s tournament opener against CSK at Chepauk on March 23, and will look to make amends in the fixture against Gujarat Titans at Ahmedabad on March 29.
