Tamim Iqbal, former Bangladesh captain, suffered a heart attack on March 24 morning during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka.
Attempts were made to transfer him to Dhaka by helicopter, but his condition worsened along the trip. Later, the former Bangladesh opener was transported to Fazilatunnesa Hospital for more treatment.
“He underwent initial checks at a local hospital, where mild heart issues were suspected. Efforts were made to transport him to Dhaka, but on the way to the helipad, he experienced severe chest pain and had to be rushed back. Medical reports later confirmed it was a massive heart attack,” said Dr Debashish Chowdhury, chief physician of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as quoted by Sportstar.
“It is a difficult time for all of us. He is currently under observation, and the medical team is doing everything possible for his recovery. He is currently under observation. This is all the information available at the moment. We are heading to the hospital, and further updates will be provided later,'' he added.
As per a report by Bangladesh's Daily Star, Iqbal's one of the two arteries is 100 per cent blocked.
"Nafees Iqbal and his mother are here now. The doctors did an angiogram. Out of his two arteries, one is 100 percent blocked another is partially blocked," match referee Debabrata Paul told the Bangladesh daily.
Tamim is the fourth-leading run-scorer in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2024-25. The southpaw has scored 368 runs in seven innings at an average of 73.60, including two centuries. His 102.50 strike rate is comparable to modern One-Day cricket.
