India skipper Rohit Sharma is reportedly planning to extend his career till the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa and doesn’t want to give up playing Test cricket either.
According to a Cricbuzz report, Rohit has already chalked out a comprehensive plan to work on his fitness and batting, with the help of current men’s senior assistant coach Abhishek Nayar.
The report further stated that a lot of decisions on his future will depend on his performance in the upcoming IPL 2025 season.
Nayar has previously worked with a number of Indian cricketers, including KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik to help them unlock new aspects of their games. Rohit has also acknowledged Nayar’s contributions in his success.
After the T20 World Cup win last year, Rohit Sharma had announced his retirement from the shortest format for India. His red-ball future currently stands in limbo after he dropped himself from the fifth BGT Test against Australia at SCG in January 2025.
Rumours were rife that his international career won’t go beyond the recently held Champions Trophy 2025. However, the storylines changed after India clinched the coveted ICC title by beating New Zealand in the final last Sunday, with Rohit earning the Player-of-the-Match award for his 76-run knock.
In the post-match press conference, Rohit addressed the inevitable question regarding his ODI future, confirming that he was not going anywhere from the format.
“One more thing, I’m not going to retire from this format, just to make sure no more rumours are spread,” Rohit told reporters.
However, the 37-year-old remained non-committal about his participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
"Right now, I am taking things as they come. It wouldn't be fair for me to think too far ahead. At this moment, my focus is on playing well and maintaining the right mindset. I don't want to draw any lines and say whether I will or won't play in the 2027 World Cup," Rohit said in an interaction with JioHotstar.
